Lindsay Berman

Hi! Tell us about yourself
Hiya! I’m Lindsay Berman, and I live in Maplewood with my husband and daughter. We moved here in 2019 from Brooklyn (original we are not).

Besides Brooklyn, I also lived for many years in Philly and I grew up in Allentown, PA.

Tell us about your business!

I’m a one-woman-show (aka solopreneur) that helps small businesses attract potential customers, turn them into paying customers, and nurture their brand loyalty to generate repeat business forevermore.

I’m based in Maplewood and love working with local SOMA-area businesses, but I can and do work with businesses anywhere in the country.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, something for which I’ve always had a weirdly massive amount of pride and gratitude. It seemed like the perfect microcosm of America – with families from a wide mix of backgrounds, religions, races, and perspectives. I attended the same high school that both my parents and three of my four grandparents went to. No matter how many years pass since I’ve moved away, it will always be home.

How long have you been doing the work you do?

I officially launched my business in January 2023, but I have been working in marketing since 2000.

What excites you the most about what you do?

I get to know so many inspiring entrepreneurs, learn all about their fascinating businesses, and help them to make those businesses even better.

What is it about you that makes you so good at what you do?

I pursued a career switch over a decade ago and got my masters in counseling. Marketing and business drew me back before I ever put it into practice professionally. But I think that particular piece of my education, and really that part of me, is something my clients value and what sets me apart. My very first client once called me an “entrepreneur whisperer”. I like to think that’s exactly what I am.

What 4 items are essential for you to do the work you do?

Curiosity: Marketing strategies aren’t just copy/paste. Every business is different, and every entrepreneur has their own goals and needs. The key to meeting the needs of my clients is staying open and curious.

Patience: Some marketing tactics (especially those that are organic/unpaid) don’t show immediate results. It can be a waiting game, and sometimes you just need to bring your patience pants.

Data: This one goes hand-in-hand with patience sometimes, but it’s always worth the effort to collect and follow the data.

Flexibility: People have different ways in which they like to work and communicate. My goal is to support each entrepreneur the way that’s best for them. That means being flexible with how and when I deliver information, how we plan our work together, and course changes along the way.

And just for fun…

If your business had a theme song, what would it be and why?

Lovely Day by Bill Withers. Any day that we entrepreneurs get to make progress on a path we’ve charted for ourselves is a lovely day. Full of hope and possibility, no matter the stress that comes with it. And even more lovely is being able to forge connections and work on that progress together.

What legacy do you hope to leave through your business?

The greatest legacy I could leave would be my clients being thrilled and fulfilled by their thriving businesses. And that my daughter grows up knowing she can create her own path in life.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?

This may just be the toughest question I’ve ever been asked. For me, the 90s included middle school, high school, and college. AKA the most emotionally-heightened years. So there are many, many 90s songs that make me nostalgic AF – from Tevin Campbell to Deee-Lite to Dave Matthews to Snoop Dogg. But if I could pick the ONE that transports me the most, I’d pick three (I’m sorry – it’s impossible!): Weak by SWV, Fade Into You by Mazzy Star, and the Fantasy remix by Mariah Carey with ODB.

Favorite songs to listen to when working

Nothing. 😩 I’m so jealous of people who can listen to music while they work. Music puts my brain directly into daydream mode. To focus on work (and especially to write), I need quiet.

Do you have a favorite local store or business that you wish more people knew about?

Ayala Coffee in Union. The owners are passionate about their Filipino roots, their community, and their coffee. The flavors are like nothing else you’ve had, all made in-house (the Pandan latte, you guyssss). And they’ve got sweet-lookin’ branding to boot.
